Job Summary

The Upcountry Sales Manager is a critical leadership position responsible for driving sales, expanding market penetration, and managing distribution channels within a specific assigned upcountry territory (outside of Addis Ababa). This role focuses on maximizing the availability, visibility, and sales of the company's full range of products (soap, detergent, noodles, and edible oil) by building strong relationships with distributors, wholesalers, retailers, and leading a team of sales representatives in the assigned region.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement strategic sales plans to achieve monthly, quarterly, and annual sales targets for all product categories within the assigned upcountry territory.
  • Drive both primary (to distributors) and secondary (to retailers) sales volume and value.
  • Identify new business opportunities and untapped markets within the upcountry region to expand the company's footprint.
  • Analyze sales data and market trends to identify gaps and opportunities, and implement corrective actions.
  • Recruit, appoint, and manage a strong network of distributors and wholesalers in the assigned territory.
  • Ensure optimal stock levels, efficient order placement, and timely delivery of products through the distribution network.
  • Monitor distributor performance against agreed KPIs (e.g., sales volume, coverage, stock rotation, financial health).
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key distributors, providing them with necessary support and guidance.
  • Resolve any operational issues or conflicts within the distribution chain promptly and effectively.
  • Lead, mentor, and motivate a team of Upcountry Sales Representatives / Area Sales Officers.
  • Set clear individual and team sales targets and KPIs.
  • Conduct regular field visits with the sales team to provide on-the-job coaching, training, and performance feedback
  • Continuously monitor market conditions, competitor activities, pricing strategies, and promotional initiatives in the upcountry region.
  • Gather and report market intelligence to the Head of Marketing and Sales to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Identify opportunities for product innovation, marketing campaigns, or adjustments to sales strategies based on local market insights.
  • Collaborate with the marketing department to ensure effective implementation of trade marketing activities, promotions, and merchandising standards in retail outlets. 
  • Oversee the proper utilization of point-of-sale (POS) materials and promotional tools.
  • Prepare and submit accurate and timely sales reports, forecasts, expense reports, and market feedback reports.
  • Maintain updated records of distributors, retailers, and sales team performance.

Qualifications

Education

  • BA/MA in Marketing Management, Business Administration, Management, Business Management or related fields 

Experience:

  • 8/6 years progressive experience respectively as National Sales Manager, Regional Sales Manager, Deputy Sales Manager.

Skills:

  • strong leadership and people management skills. 
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills. 
  • Deep understanding of the Ethiopian upcountry market dynamics, consumer behavior, and distribution channels. 
  • Ability to analyze sales data, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions. 
  • Proficiency in sales forecasting, budgeting, and reporting. 
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). 
  • Fluency in Amharic and at least one major regional language (e.g., Afaan Oromo, Tigrinya) is highly preferred and often essential for effective upcountry operations.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel extensively within the assigned territory.
