LonAdd HR Consultancy Plc (www.lonadd.com) is a Recruitment & Outsourcing Company based in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia, with branch offices in Dukem, Hawassa and Bahir Dar. We are looking to recruit Translator/ Interpreter to join On Behalf of Our Client.

Background of the role:

KEFI Minerals is preparing for construction of the Tulu Kapi project in Western Ethiopia approximately 360km West of Addis Ababa. KEFI plans to construct a 2.0 Mtpa open pit CIL production operation with an expected mine life of 9 - 12 years.

Construction of the project is to begin in 2025.

The Translator/Interpreter serves as a vital linguistic and cultural bridge, enabling seamless communication across language barriers in both written and spoken contexts.

Purpose of the role 

This role is responsible for accurately converting content from a source language into a target language, ensuring that the message's original meaning, context, tone, and intent are faithfully preserved, whether delivered orally in real-time or meticulously crafted in written form. The incumbent will operate with a high degree of linguistic precision, cultural sensitivity, and ethical conduct.

Authority 

The role holder has no authority to speak on behalf of the Company with any of the following outside agencies unless it is in an interpreting capacity and unless authorized by the Managing Director. 

  • All levels of Government on all issues concerning the Company
  • Consultant and contractors foreign and domestic
  • KEFI Gold and Copper plc and associated companies and officers
  • External stakeholders 

The role holder is also not authorized to speak with any media without prior authorization from the Managing Director.

Accountabilities for this role 

Safety, Health & Environment

  • Model behaviors that is consistent with the Tulu Kapi Safety Vision and Values.
  • Lead by example, maintain a record of zero major safety incidents and continuously improve safety

Interpreting - Real-time Spoken Language Conversion

  • Facilitate communication in live settings by accurately and fluently converting spoken messages between individuals or groups speaking different languages. 

This includes:

  • Simultaneous Interpreting: Render spoken messages from source to target language almost instantaneously, typically in conferences, large meetings, or live broadcasts, often utilizing specialized equipment.
  • Consecutive Interpreting: Translate segments of speech (e.g., statements, questions, answers) into the target language after the speaker has paused, often using note-taking techniques. Common in interviews, discussions, or smaller meetings.
  • Whispered Interpreting: Provide simultaneous interpretation by whispering the translation directly to one or two individuals.
  • Sight Translation: Orally translate written documents or text on the fly during meetings or other interpreting assignments for immediate understanding.
  • Maintain fidelity by ensuring precise, complete, and unbiased conveyance of the original message, including technical terminology, nuances, tone, and intent, without omissions, additions, or distortions. 
  • Uphold strict impartiality in all interpreting scenarios.
  • Adjust interpreting style and pace to suit the specific setting, speaker's delivery, and audience needs, often under time pressure.

Translating - Written Content Conversion

  • Accurately convert a diverse range of written materials from a source language into a target language, ensuring linguistic accuracy, grammatical correctness, stylistic appropriateness, and cultural relevance.

This includes, inter alia:

  • Corporate documents, i.e. correspondence, reports, presentations, policies, HR materials etc.
  • Communication materials, e.g. briefings, electronic and social media, brochures, press releases.
  • Legal documents, e.g. proclamations, directives, contracts, agreements, permits and licensing documents.
  • Technical documentation, e.g. manuals, specifications, product description. 
  • Educational and training materials.
  • Financial, operational and project reports.
  • Meticulously proofread, edit, and self-revise translated texts to ensure high quality, accuracy, and consistency before delivery and incorporate feedback from reviewers and clients efficiently.
  • Ensure that any translation of a legal document does not deviate from the main or core concept of the legal/directive frame work and free of any ambiguity.
  • Develop, maintain, and utilize terminology databases, glossaries, and style guides to ensure consistency and accuracy across all written translation projects. Research specialist terminology as needed

Subject Matter Expertise

  • Develop and maintain a strong understanding of specialized terminology and concepts relevant to the mining industry or the specific domain of work, e.g., legal, technical, financial, etc. 
  • Conduct thorough pre-assignment research to ensure preparedness.

Cross Functional Collaboration

  • Providing specialist support and communicate proactively and clearly with managers, clients, and colleagues regarding project status, challenges, clarifications needed, and scheduling.
  • Liaise with Document Controllers to ensure that translated copies of documents are correctly referenced, numbered and captured in the Document Management System.

  • Adhere strictly to professional codes of ethics, including maintaining absolute confidentiality of all sensitive information, upholding impartiality, and demonstrating professional decorum in all interactions
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with all shareholders, government agencies and industry partners

  • Stay current with linguistic trends, industry best practices, new technologies, and subject matter knowledge through ongoing learning and professional development activities
  • Taking all necessary actions to ensure compliance with statutory requirements, legislated regulations, policies, work standards, and governance requirements and corporate standards and guidelines e.g. Sustainability Framework.

Requirement of the role 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Translation, Interpreting, Linguistics, Modern Languages, or a related field.
  • Post-graduate qualification or specialized certification in Translation or Interpreting is highly advantageous.

Knowledge and experience 

  • Three years’ experience as a professional Translator and Interpreter, with demonstrated proficiency in both written and spoken language conversion.
  • Experience in a heavy industrial or mining industry is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrable experience utilizing Translation Memory (TM) tools, Machine Translation Post-Editing (MTPE) tools and Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) software.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, or equivalent, standard office software

Technical Competencies and Skills

  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of the cultural contexts, idioms, and nuances of both source and target languages to ensure culturally appropriate and effective communication.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication with language proficiency in English, Afaan Oromo and Amharic at the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) category C1: Proficient User standard
  • Ability to assertively control the interpreting situation to ensure pace and content lends itself to effective communication
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Proven ability to priorities and manage workload
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • High degree of collaborative skills
