Background of the role:

KEFI Minerals is preparing for construction of the Tulu Kapi project in Western Ethiopia approximately 360km West of Addis Ababa. KEFI plans to construct a 2.0 Mtpa open pit CIL production operation with an expected mine life of 9 - 12 years.

Construction of the project is to begin in 2025.

The Commercial Manager role is critical in providing commercial leadership across the Company and ensure compliance with regulatory standards, contract management principles, internal controls, and privacy and industrial relations policies as well as managing and building strong business partnering relationships. Self-confident and assertive in interaction with internal and external parties

Purpose of the role 

Reporting to the Financial Director, the role forms an integral part of the Finance Team, tasked to be accountable for rendering a specialized/professional Commercial Services to the operations through:

  • Managing the supply of all goods and services to the mining operation, effectively utilizing established systems and standards, and continuously monitoring work processes, to identify areas for improvement, and
  • Inventory Management, Warehousing, Logistics and Materials Engineering.

Requirement of the role 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Transport or Supply Chain Management or equivalent qualification.
  • MBA or successful completion of a Management Development Program.
  • Supporting additional qualifications focusing on logistic management and/or finance will be an advantage.

Authority 

The role holder has the authority to speak on behalf of the Company with the following outside agencies:

  • Consultant and contractors foreign and domestic

  • KEFI Gold and Copper plc and associated companies and officers

  • External stakeholders as they relate and are pertinent to the role

The role holder is not authorized to speak with any media without prior authorization from the Managing Director.

Accountabilities for this role 

Occupational Health and Safety

  • Model behaviors' that is consistent with the Tulu Kapi and values.
  • Set departmental health and safety goals annually and ensure that appropriate focus and resources are available to achieve safety objectives.
  • Identify and interpret safety risks and resolve emerging issues. 
  • Develop, drive and maintain processes to provide a safe workplace to all employees and external service providers undertaking work within the area of accountability.

Supply Chain Management

  • Develop and implement a Supply Chain strategy for the Company.
  • Contribute to the development of Supply Chain policies and procedures.
  • Lead and manage the Company’s Supply Chain function, ensuring effective sourcing, purchasing, and delivery of goods and services.
  • Optimize Supply Chain processes to ensure cost-effectiveness, reliability, and timely delivery of materials critical to operations.
  • Ensuring through effective warehousing strategies policies and procedures the efficient, accurate, and safe movement and storage of goods to meet business objectives and internal customer demands.
  • Develop and execute logistic strategies to ensure timely and cost-effective movement of materials and equipment to and from the Mine License Area (MLA), including any holding areas en route.
  • Manages the in-transit visibility (ITV) of materials and assets throughout their journey in the supply chain.
  • Manage the Tender Process in all cases of external suppliers and services
  • Provides reports to Management/Corporate on a monthly basis or as required.

Contract Negotiations and Management

  • Lead the development, negotiation, and administration of complex commercial contracts with suppliers, contractors, service providers, and off-takers.
  • Ensure strict adherence to contract terms and conditions, including managing contractual correspondence, notices, and deliverables (e.g., guarantees, insurances).
  • Proactively identify, assess, and manage commercial risks associated with contracts and business operations.
  • Oversee change management processes, ensuring that variations and claims are properly priced, documented, and negotiated to maximize entitlements and safeguard margins.
  • Support the resolution of claims, variations, and disputes.

Risk Management

  • Identify, assess, and mitigate commercial risks across all aspects of the mining operation, including, contractual disputes, and operational efficiencies.
  • Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies and contingency plans.
  • Ensure clear ownership of risks across the project team and conduct regular reviews.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Provide strong and effective leadership to the commercial team. 
  • Mentor and develop team members, setting performance objectives and conducting regular reviews
  • Foster a culture of compliance, accountability, and continuous improvement within the commercial function.

Compliance and Governance

  • Ensure all commercial activities comply with internal policies, corporate governance frameworks, and relevant local and international laws and regulations. 
  • Ensure necessary audits and investigations are planned, executed and outcomes reported to the Financial Director with assurance that conducts are in line with general policy, procedures and guidelines that apply and recommend applicable changes/improvements where necessary and applicable. 
  • Maintain meticulous records to support all commercial decisions and transactions

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders (operations, technical teams, corporate functions) and external stakeholders (clients, suppliers, regulatory authorities).
  • Act as the primary commercial point of contact for external parties.

Supply Chain Information Systems

  • Manage the support process, enhancement / changes, implementation and maintenance of an ERP system, in accordance with the various department/management reporting and information needs.
  • Direct effective technology utilization through use of Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), automation tools (e.g., barcode scanners, AGVs), and other technologies to streamline operations and enhance accuracy.

Cross Functional Accountabilities for this Role

  • Provide strategic commercial insights and advice to the Financial Director and leadership team.
  • Carry collateral accountability and authority to influence colleagues to achieve the organizational goals and task objectives in accordance with the context set by the Financial Manager.
  • Provide technical specialist support and advice through collateral and cross functional approaches on the formulation and execution of best practices, improvements pertaining to mine plans, cost and production outputs for the Company.

Knowledge and experience 

  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive commercial management experience, with a significant portion within the mining or heavy industrial sectors experience which cover project and production phases of which at least 8 years must have been in a management role with accountability for the commercial management of:
  • Monthly orders exceeding USD 5m
  • Inventory management of USD 30m+
  • Demonstrated experience in financial management, contract negotiation and administration, procurement, and supply chain management.
  • Proven track record of managing commercial risk and driving profitability.
  • Experience in a senior leadership role, with strong team management and development skills
  • Experience in the successful implementation of an ERP system – materials module specific
  • Proven track record of successful development and implementation of a supply chain strategy within a mining/similar environment
  • Extensive experience in international resourcing/trading and logistics management
  • Thorough understanding of the relevant industry regulations and compliance framework as well as contract law and commercial principles
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft 365 and Office suite (Word, excel)
