Purpose

Under the supervision and guidance of the Senior General Accountant, the purpose of the General Accountant  is to ensure that all cash payment and receipt including non-cash transactions are valid and in accordance with company policy and government regulations. Also to ensure that the indicated transactions, other than those captured by cost accountants, are processed and recorded in time and accurately in the existing accounting system—Peachtree Accounting—enabling the department to produce relevant financial information in time.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIEs

• Checks transactions for validity and evidenced with necessary documents and get proper approval by authorized company officials before payment applications are processed

• Prepares vouchers/cheques, JVs, etc and presents for approval by the Senior General Accountant

• Ensure that payment and receipt vouchers are coded and recorded in to their correct accounts in the Peachtree Accounting.

• Posts journal entries into the Peachtree accounting 

• Keeps accounts documents in a chronologically arranged box files

• Reconciles accounts like accounts receivables and payables with balances kept with counter party periodically

• Ensures periodic tax payments are ready for payment and presents to senior accountant for checking

• Prepares summary reports on taxes—VAT, WHT, Payroll tax etc

• Reconciles monthly stock records between accounts and store

• VAT payments made by purchasers are collected from purchasers in time for reporting to MOR, and keeps records of VAT payments not submitted to accounts in time by purchasers and produce monthly summary report to the Senior General Accountant. 

• Keeps good communication and relationship with fellow finance team and other colleagues.  

• Assist and supervise the works of junior accountants 

• Perform any assignments given by the immediate supervisor

EDUCATION

• A minimum of BA Degree in Accounting or Finance from officially recognized University or College is required

EXPERIENCE

• 1 – 2 years of accounting and finance related work experience in similar industry is required

BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCY

• Ability to work the activities detailed above in time and in reasonable accuracy.

• Excellent communication and listening skills with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of management and other staff.

• Demonstrate compliance to ‘Company Code of Ethics’ and the nationally accepted Standards for the Practice of accounting.
