Background

Geneva Global operates across all regions of Ethiopia and is expanding its programming with a new Education in Emergencies project targeting out-of-school children in various parts of the country. Geneva Global is an international philanthropy advisory and program management organization that supports high-impact social change. In Ethiopia, it implements the Leaders in Teaching Ethiopia (LiTE) program, a flagship initiative of the Mastercard Foundation aimed at strengthening teacher supply, instructional leadership, and student transitions in low-performing secondary schools.

Job Summary

The Finance Assistance is responsible for supporting the financial operations of the organization. This includes processing transactions, maintaining financial records, preparing financial reports, ensuring compliance with internal policies and external regulations, and assisting in budgeting and audit activities.

Key Responsibilities

1. Financial Management & Transactions

  • Process day-to-day financial transactions including payments, receipts, and journal entries.
  • Maintain up-to-date records of financial transactions in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Peachtree, etc.).
  • Ensure accurate coding of expenses by donor/project/account.
  • Prepare payment vouchers, receipts, and journal entries.
  • Support bank and cash reconciliations on a regular basis.
  • Maintain proper filing of financial documents (hard copy and electronic).

2. Cash and Bank Management

  • Monitor and reconcile bank accounts and petty cash balances.
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Ensure timely and accurate payments to suppliers and staff.

3. Budgeting & Reporting

  • Assist in tracking expenditures against approved budgets.
  • Support monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
  • Support donor-specific and project-specific financial reporting.
  • Provide budget vs actual analysis and indicate variances. 
  • Confirm compile financial documents for audits and spot checks.

4. Compliance and Audit

  • Ensure compliance with organizational financial policies, donor requirements, and local laws.
  • Support internal and external audit processes by providing required documentation.
  • Identify discrepancies or irregularities to the Finance Officer

5. Payroll & Taxation

  • Assist in preparing monthly payroll and ensure timely tax and pension contributions.
  • Maintain confidentiality of payroll data.
  • Ensure timely submission of statutory deductions (e.g., income tax, pension, withholding tax).

6. Support, Coordination & Administration

  • Support project staff with financial guidance and training where needed.
  • Assist the program and administrative staff on finance-related matters.
  • Support inventory records and asset tracking when required.
  • Perform other finance-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in finance or accounting.
  • Experience working with NGOs or donor-funded projects is a plus.
  • Familiarity with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Peachtree, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of Ethiopian tax and labor laws (if applicable).

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • High integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other MS Office applications
