Job Title: Gender Equality, Safeguarding and, Inclusion (GESI) Officer 

Program: Leaders in Teaching Ethiopia (LiTE) for Secondary Education 

Number of Positions: 2 ; 

Somali Region ( Jigjiga) One (1) and Southwest Ethiopia People’s and Gambella Regions One (1) 

Reports to: LiTE Program Lead, Country Office 

Location: Based in assigned region with frequent travel to target schools 

Background 

Geneva Global is an international philanthropy advisory and program management organization supporting high-impact social change. Geneva Global Ethiopia is implementing Leaders in Teaching Ethiopia (LiTE), a flagship initiative of Mastercard Foundation focused on strengthening teacher supply, instructional leadership, and student transitions in low performing secondary schools. 

Position Overview 

Gender Equality, Safeguarding and Inclusion Officer will lead to the integration of gender-responsive, child-safeguarding, disability-inclusive, and youth-centered approaches across the LiTE secondary school intervention. The purpose of the role is to ensure that young learners especially girls, students with disabilities, refugees/IDPs, and marginalized youth learn in safe, inclusive, empowering, and supportive school environments that enable academic success and smooth transition to post-secondary opportunities or dignified work. 

Key Responsibilities 

The officer will work across gender equality, safeguarding, disability inclusion, youth engagement, community participation, monitoring and learning, and training and capacity development to ensure holistic student-centered support is in place in the targeted secondary schools. 

  A. Gender Equality 

  • Conduct gender assessments in target regions. 
  • Support schools with gender-responsive pedagogy. 
  • Strengthening teacher capacity to challenge harmful norms. 
  • Facilitate girls’ clubs, mentorship programs, and alumni networks. 
  • Support menstrual hygiene management facilities and safe spaces. 

  B. Safeguarding & Child Protection 

  • Lead implementation of safeguarding policies. 
  • Conduct risk assessments and develop mitigation plans. 
  • Train teachers, leaders, and students on child protection. 
  • Strengthening reporting mechanisms and committees. 
  • Ensure case management and referral in a survivor-centered manner. 

  C. Disability Inclusion 

  • Conduct mapping and screening of students with disabilities. 
  • Support referral pathways and provision of assistive devices. 
  • Promote universal design and inclusive teaching. 
  • Support Inclusive Education Resource Centers. 
  • Build teacher capacity in inclusive education. 

  D. Youth Engagement 

  • Engage youth through councils, feedback systems, and co-design. 
  • Support clubs (entrepreneurship, leadership, safeguarding). 
  • Facilitate peer-to-peer mentorship. 
  • Support youth participation in career & vocational hubs and leadership activities. 

  E. Community Engagement 

  • Conduct community sensitization on education, inclusion, and youth protection. 
  • Engage PTSAs, elders, refugee committees, and local leaders. 
  • Lead Back-to-Learning campaigns. 
  • Support parent engagement related activities. 

  F. Access, Retention & Transition 

  • Support transition-focused activities such as tutorials and mentorship. 
  • Facilitate scholarships, psychosocial support, and academic clubs. 
  • Strengthen career guidance-related activities in schools ensuring balanced engagement of both male and female adolescent students. 

  G. Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning 

  • Collect gender, safeguarding, and inclusion data. 
  • Conduct monitoring visits. 
  • Document learning and success stories. 
  • Ensure accountability mechanisms are active. 

  H. Training & Capacity Strengthening 

  • Train teachers, leaders, and teachers on GESI and safeguarding. 
  • Develop tools, guidelines, and school GESI action plans. 

Qualifications & Competencies 

  • Master’s or BA degree in Gender Studies, Education, Social Work, Psychology, Development Studies, or related fields. 
  • Minimum 3 (MA) or 5 (BA) years’ experience in GESI, safeguarding, child protection, inclusion, or youth development. 
  • Experience working with adolescents in secondary schools. 
  • Knowledge of safeguarding, GBV risk mitigation, disability inclusion, and child rights. 
  • Experience with community mobilization and education systems. 
  • Knowledge of the working languages of the region is an advantage.
