Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) in collaboration with St Paul Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) and Children Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is planning to conduct a clinical trial entitled " Efficacy of probiotic supplementation in preterm and small for gestational age infants. A WHO Sponsored multi-center, individually-randomized trial (Probiotics in preterm and small for gestational infants, PROPS trial) ". The project is founded by Gates Foundation and Coordinated by Johns Hopkins University. We are looking for study pharmacists, study laboratory technologist and study nurses, for effective implementation of the trial as listed below. The recruited study staff will work in collaboration with the project PIs, study coordinators and field supervisors; work package leads and the project staff at AHRI and SPHMMC as well as perform field activities.
Duty location: Armauer Hansen Research Institute, to be assigned to different study sites across Addis Ababa.

Position Summary
The study laboratory technologist will assist in the conduct of bacteriology-related research and laboratory activities within the PROPS project. The role includes participation in the optimization, validation, and troubleshooting of microbiological assays; isolation and characterization of bacterial organisms; and support for ongoing studies on antibiotic resistance and bacterial pathogenesis.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct laboratory research and analysis in support of the PROPS bacteriology objectives.
Assist in the design, optimization, verification, and validation of current and new microbiological assays.
Transport Samples from one study site to another
Isolate and identify suspected bacterial organisms using conventional and modern methods.
Support studies on bacterial pathogenesis, virulence factors, and mechanisms of antibiotic resistance.
Prepare and maintain bacterial and phage stocks, culture media, and cell cultures.
Perform aerobic and anaerobic bacterial cultures using both conventional and automated systems.
Conduct immunological and molecular assays such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, and qPCR.
Maintain accurate laboratory records, data logs, and documentation in compliance with GLP and biosafety standards.
Ensure strict adherence to biosafety and quality control procedures.
Participate in report preparation, data analysis, and presentation of research findings.
Job Requirements
Education and Experience:
BSc Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology
Minimum CGPA of 3.00 for male and 2.75 for female applicants.
2 years of laboratory work experience.
Health research or clinical experience is preferred.
Specialized Skills:
Experience with aerobic bacterial culture using conventional and automated methods is a plus.
Competence in culture media preparation, maintenance, and purification of bacterial stocks is a plus
Familiarity with cell culture techniques and basic immunological and molecular assays (PCR, qPCR), a plus.
Skill in identifying and characterizing bacterial species.
Knowledge of biosafety, aseptic technique, and quality assurance procedures.
