Job Description
Translink supplies, installs and supports GPS tracking/telematics and fleet management systems. We are looking for two technicians to install and maintain tracking devices on our customers’ vehicles and machinery. The work is carried out both in our workshop and at customer sites, and includes keeping every unit reporting reliably once it has been fitted.
Key Responsibilities
Install, wire and conceal GPS tracking units and accessories, including fuel sensors, immobilisers, panic buttons and antennas, on cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, generators and machinery.
Identify the correct power, ignition, ground and OBD-II / CAN-bus connection points from wiring diagrams and technical manuals, and make secure, well-insulated connections.
AdvertisementConfigure and register devices on the tracking platform, calibrate sensors, and test each installation for GPS fix, signal, ignition and mileage before releasing the vehicle.
Diagnose and repair faulty installations, including non-reporting units, battery drain, false ignition readings and damaged wiring.
Attend field service call-outs, and remove, relocate or recover devices as required.
Complete job cards with device IMEI, SIM and vehicle details, take installation photographs, obtain customer sign-off and submit daily reports.
Brief drivers and fleet officers on basic use of the device, and maintain your tools and stock in good order.
Job Requirements
Qualifications
Education: TVET Level III in Auto Electricity, Automotive / General Mechanics, Electricity and Electronics, or a related vehicular field.
Experience: Minimum one (1) year in auto-electrical work or general vehicle mechanics.
Ability to read technical manuals and wiring diagrams, and to apply them to unfamiliar vehicles and machinery.
Working knowledge of electrical systems on vehicles and machinery, and confident use of a multimeter.
Neat, secure wiring practice, including crimping, soldering, looming and concealment.
Basic computer and smartphone literacy, sufficient to configure devices and use a web-based tracking platform.
Honesty and care when working unsupervised in customer vehicles, and willingness to travel and work flexible hours.
Preferred Qualifications
A valid driving licence for motorcycles and/or vehicles. Candidates holding both categories are preferred.
Previous work with a GPS tracking / telematics technology.
Experience with immobilisers, car alarms, fuel-level sensors or OBD-II / CAN-bus diagnostic tools.
Certificate of Competence (COC) in the relevant occupation.
