Job Title: Junior Researcher (GIS & Remote Sensing)
The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). AHRI is a biomedical research institute that works in developing tools for prevention, control and treatment of mycobacterium and other diseases of public healthy importance through applied and basic biomedical research and training.
The Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases Research (MNTD) Division of AHRI has secured different grants on malaria that have qualitative study work packages. These studies will be implemented in different selected study sites throughout the country. Therefore, the MNTD Division is looking for self-driven, motivated, innovative, and energetic Junior Researcher (GIS & Remote Sensing) who can coordinate the different malaria projects and perform tasks related to formative research.
Description of Roles and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will join the study team and work closely with the project team members. The Junior Researcher is expected to perform the following tasks.
Desired Skills and Experience
Proficient in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, GeoDA, SaTScan, ArcWeb services, and ArcGIS Server) and remote sensing tools (e.g., ENVI, Erdas Imagine, and sources of satellite imagery).
have completed projects or coursework that enable them to conduct basic geospatial analysis and data management tasks.
Having prior Knowledge of programming languages commonly used in GIS and remote sensing, such as Python or R, is advantageous.
Familiarity with data management tools and database querying is beneficial.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to effectively communicate Geostatistical concepts to non-Geospatial team members.
Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Collect and manage geospatial data.
Conduct spatial analysis to identify patterns and trends.
Create thematic maps to visually represent spatial patterns and distributions.
Develop and implement spatial models to simulate the spread and predict outcomes.
Stay updated with GIS software and tools, and explore emerging technologies.
Generate choropleth maps, heat maps, or other visualization techniques to communicate spatial information effectively.
Incorporate temporal aspects to track changes in disease patterns over time.
Contribute to the development and maintenance of spatial data infrastructure (SDI) for disease mapping and surveillance systems.

BSc/BA in GIS and Remote sensing, Geomatics, Chartography, or a related field with no experience: Minimum CGPA of 3.00 for male and 2.75 for female applicants

Duty station: Addis Ababa
Number required: 1 (one)
Salary: ETB : As per the institution scale
Terms of employment: One-year contract period on a full-time employment basis with possibility of extension
