Position Title: Solar Energy Technical Head of Technology, Design & Product Innovation
Job Summary
The Technical Head of Technology, Design & Product Innovation is responsible for leading the design, engineering, and implementation of renewable energy systems and related technologies, ensuring high-quality, reliable, and cost-effective technical solutions.
Reporting directly to the Chief Operations Officer-COO, the role oversees system design, product engineering, and technical documentation, while managing internal technicians and outsourced technical partners. The Technical Head also drives Research & Development (R&D), pilots new technologies, and enables internal capacity through technical training of sales, marketing, and implementation teams.
This role is mission-critical to strengthening Lydetco’s technical delivery and competitive edge, particularly in high-impact areas such as solar water pump design and rural pricing strategies. The Technical Head is expected to proactively support bid development and field execution by generating timely, tailored designs and cost estimates that reflect real-world rural constraints.

Technical Design & System Engineering
Lead the design and engineering of solar PV systems, solar coolers, mini-grids, thermal systems, water pumps, and other renewable energy solutions
Develop detailed BOQs, sizing, and load assessments to ensure compliance, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
Review and approve all technical proposals for tenders, projects, and client engagements
Project Technical Oversight
Supervise and mentor technicians; manage recruitment and outsourcing of technical manpower based on project needs
Provide on-site technical support, troubleshooting, and supervision for installations or testing
Collaborate with the Project Delivery team to ensure seamless execution of technical components
R&D and Technology Innovation
Lead internal research and piloting of new energy and water technologies in collaboration with partners or vendors
Monitor international trends and emerging technologies in renewable energy and advise leadership
Create frameworks for technology evaluation, piloting, adaptation, and scaling
Cross-Functional Technical Support
Work closely with the Bid Manager and Strategic Growth team to provide technical inputs during tender preparation
Support pre-sales engineering and feasibility assessments for clients and partners
Coordinate with procurement to identify and qualify new technology suppliers
Internal Capacity Building
Design and deliver training sessions on technical products and innovations for sales, marketing, and field teams
Develop technical manuals, product guides, and internal SOPs for equipment and installations
Build a learning and improvement culture around technology within the company
Quality Assurance & Documentation
Ensure standardization and quality control across all technical deliverables
Maintain up-to-date technical documentation, schematics, test reports, and system logs
Contribute to certifications, warranty claims, and compliance documentation when required
Rural Solar Pump Design & Pricing
Build internal tools and templates for designing and pricing solar water pumping systems, factoring in rural terrain, labor, civil works, and variability in implementation costs.
Collaborate with procurement to streamline access to vendor pricing and technical catalogs.
Support bid teams and field sales with rapid design-response tools and estimates tailored to Ethiopia’s rural market realities.
Lead or assign technical field assessments where needed to develop custom solutions in tenders or sales.
Job Requirements
Job Specification and Qualifications
Education: BSc/MSc Degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or related fields
Experience: 6/4 years of direct experience in solar PV design, installation, and project management. Further to that he/she shall have proven track record in managing large-scale solar projects (utility, commercial, or donor-funded) projects.
Skills & Competencies
Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of PV systems, battery storage, hybrid systems, and grid integration.
Leadership: Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage cross-departmental collaboration.
Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with Ethiopian energy regulations and international standards.
ERP & Digital Tools: Experience with ERP systems, Solar system design softwares such as PVsyst and Aurora solar, project dashboards, and digital monitoring tools.
Communication: Strong presentation, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
Strategic Thinking: Ability to align technical operations with business expansion goals.
