JSI is a US-based public health nonprofit organization dedicated to providing high-quality technical and managerial assistance programs throughout the world. In Ethiopia, JSI has been working to improve health outcomes for more than 30 years, implementing more than 60 projects and working in every region. JSI has historically managed a large portfolio of projects focusing on the quality, and equity in access of, RMNCAH services, primary health care (PHC) including community health program, digital health, health information systems (HIS), supply chain management, public health emergency responses, and social and behavior change. 

Role Summary         

A dynamic internship position is available within the esteemed Knowledge Management and Communications team at JSI Ethiopia. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced, global health organization. The selected intern will play a crucial part in the team's efforts to capture, curate, and disseminate vital knowledge and information within and beyond JSI's operations in Ethiopia.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Knowledge Management Support: The intern will be instrumental in the execution of internal knowledge management strategies. This involves identifying, organizing, and cataloging a diverse range of knowledge products generated from various JSI projects throughout Ethiopia. These materials might include reports, presentations, best practices documents, and other resources that contribute to organizational learning and knowledge sharing.

  • Content Curation and Storage: A core duty will be the systematic collection and secure storage of these knowledge products. This necessitates meticulous attention to detail and adherence to established protocols for digital asset management. The intern will ensure that information is readily accessible and retrievable by team members and relevant stakeholders.

  • Communications Assistance: The intern will actively contribute to JSI's communication endeavors, helping to craft engaging content for various platforms. This includes drafting stories that highlight project successes and impact, writing concise news items for internal and external audiences, conducting interviews with project staff and beneficiaries, and assisting with the management of social media channels.

  • Event Coordination: The intern will provide valuable support in organizing and coordinating meetings, events, and workshops. This may involve logistical planning, preparing materials, assisting with registration, and ensuring that events run smoothly.

  • Production of Communication Materials: The intern will be involved in the development and production of both digital and printed communication materials. This could include designing infographics, creating brochures, formatting reports, and assisting with the layout of newsletters and other publications.

Reporting Structure:

The intern will report directly to the Communications and External Relations Manager, receiving guidance and supervision throughout the internship period. This mentorship will provide invaluable insights into professional communications practices and knowledge management principles in the context of international development.

Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, political science, or a related field.

  • Passion for the topic of public health.

  • Proven experience in content development, writing and/or editorial work and graphics design (work samples may be requested).

  • Dedicated, reliable team player and highly adaptive, accommodative with intercultural sensitivity and ability to handle pressure and discourse in a professional setting.

  • Good diplomatic and intercultural skills and a sound awareness and sensitivity to gender issues.

  • Ability to think and act strategically and analytically, grasp new concepts rapidly and prioritize key topics.

  • Proactive, and creative, bringing in own ideas and suggestions.

  • Experience in social media content production and management is an advantage.

  • Experience in design and video production with expert knowhow of applications such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Premiere Pro is an advantage.

  • Strong research and documentation skills.

  • Willingness to travel to other regions in Ethiopia.

  • Strong computer skills and proficiency in using Microsoft Office 365 applications (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook, MS Teams, etc.)

  • Very good technical affinity for media contexts including knowledge of a wide range of multimedia, web and digital tools, and content management systems is an advantage.
