Job Summary: The Group Medical Director is a pivotal and highly strategic executive leader responsible for driving clinical excellence, operational efficiency, and sustainable growth across all entities within our healthcare chain in Ethiopia and beyond.  Reporting directly to the Chief Clinica/Managing Director , this role serves as the primary advisor to the healthcare chain on all clinical, quality, safety, and performance-related matters. Beyond clinical oversight, the Group Medical Director will play a critical role in the chain's expansion initiatives, market share growth, stakeholder engagement, and robust risk management, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, person-centered, and integrated care.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Executive Leadership & Board Advisory:
    • Serves as key advisor for DHS on all matters related to the overall clinical care performance, quality outcomes, patient safety, and operational effectiveness across all health facilities in the chain.
    • Contributes as an integral member of the senior executive team, aligning clinical strategies with the broader organizational vision and business objectives.
  2. Strategic Planning & Execution:
    • Leads the design of the healthcare chain's strategic plan with a major focus on: achieving superior quality, maximizing efficiency, ensuring person-centeredness, prioritizing patient safety, strengthening care integration, creating a conducive environment for health workers, standardizing care delivery, and improving overall effectiveness.
    • Cascades the strategic plan to all individual entities, ensuring clear understanding and localized implementation plans.
    • Implements and monitors the performance against strategic objectives, taking proactive corrective actions as necessary to achieve desired outcomes.
  3. Clinical Performance Oversight & Management:
    • Oversees the overall clinical performance of the individual entities in the chain, ensuring adherence to the highest standards of medical practice, patient care, and ethical conduct.
    • Monitors clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction metrics, and operational efficiency data across all facilities to identify trends and areas for intervention.
  4. DHS Expansion & Market Share Growth:
    • Leads the expansion of the chain entities, identifying strategic opportunities for growth, assessing feasibility, and overseeing the integration of new facilities in the overall chains.
    • Expands the market share of the chain by collaborating on new service line development, improving patient access, and enhancing the overall patient experience to attract and retain customers.
  5. Quality Management System Development & Implementation:
    • Designs, implements, monitors, and plans improvements on all necessary Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for clinical and administrative processes across all healthcare facilities in the chain.
    • Establishes a robust quality control system at all entities, including:
      • Designing and implementing standard works for critical processes.
      • Developing and utilizing dashboards for real-time performance monitoring.
      • Implementing accountability mechanisms to ensure adherence to standards.
      • Promoting regular "management by walking around" at entities to observe processes and engage staff.
      • Facilitating regular huddles for timely communication and problem-solving.
    • Drives quality improvement initiatives, with a particular focus on enhancing efficiency, person-centered care, patient safety, and seamless integration of care across the chain.
  6. Regulatory Compliance & Accreditation:
    • Supports facilities to comply with minimum regulatory standards set by national (Ethiopian) and international health authorities.
    • Helps health facilities to work towards achieving full accreditation status with recognized national and international bodies, guiding them through assessment processes and standard adherence.
  7. Professional Development & Capacitation:
    • Leads the overall healthcare professional development efforts, especially focusing on quality management, ethics, communication skills, and other need-based capacity building for clinical and support staff.
    • In collaboration with the Marketing Department, capacitates staffs in each entity to provide exceptional customer-centric care, enhancing patient experience from initial contact through follow-up.
    • Leads in the capacitation of chain employees and leaders on leadership, quality, and innovation, fostering a culture of continuous learning and empowerment.
  8. Technology & Integration:
    • Strengthens the integration of individual entities to work harmoniously, achieving greater efficiency, standardized care delivery, and improved patient outcomes across the chain.
    • Leads the implementation of appropriate technology and tools at the entity level to enhance clinical care delivery, data management, and operational effectiveness.
  9. Profitability, Customer Growth & Stakeholder Engagement:
    • In collaboration with the Marketing Department, actively works to boost profitability and increase new customers to each entity by aligning clinical service offerings with market demands and enhancing the patient value proposition.
    • Engages key stakeholders (e.g., government bodies, professional associations, community leaders, key vendors) that could impact the work of the chains, building strong relationships and partnerships.
  10. Risk Management:
    • Works on risk identification and mitigation for the chain, particularly related to clinical operations, patient safety, compliance, and strategic expansion. Develops and implements strategies to minimize potential threats and ensure continuity of care.

Qualifications:

  • Medical Doctor (MD)degree is required.
  • Master's degree in Healthcare Administration (MHA), Business Administration (MBA), Public Health (MPH), or a related field is highly preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive clinical and administrative experience with significant experience in a senior medical director or executive role.
  • Proven track record in designing, implementing, and managing robust quality control systems and driving significant quality improvement initiatives.
  • Extensive experience in developing and implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) within a healthcare environment.
  • Deep understanding of healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and best practices in patient safety and quality, particularly relevant to the Ethiopian context.
  • Exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence, motivate, and develop diverse teams across multiple locations.
  • Demonstrated ability to use data analytics for performance monitoring and decision-making.
  • Experience in fostering a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and patient-centered care.
  • Strong business acumen with an understanding of the link between clinical quality, patient experience, and financial performance.
  • Proven experience in strategic planning, organizational expansion, and stakeholder engagement.
