Organization Background: 

JSI is a US-based public health nonprofit organization dedicated to providing high-quality technical and managerial assistance programs throughout the world. In Ethiopia, JSI has been working to improve health outcomes for more than 30 years, implementing more than 60 projects and working in every region. JSI is currently implementing the Data Use Partnership 2.0 (DUP) Workstream I project, which provides technical assistance to the Ethiopian Ministry of Health (MOH) and Regional Health Bureaus (RHBs). DUP aims to strengthen the national Health Information System (HIS) and the broader digital health ecosystem, focusing on enhancing capacity, fostering a culture of data use, improving digital health systems and services, strengthening governance, and enhanced gender intentionality in HIS/DH. 

DUP 2.0 and MOH developed gender mainstreaming strategies within HIS/DH and supported the implementation of the strategy through different mechanisms. One of the areas in gender mainstreaming DUP is working to build the capacity of recent graduate youths, through comprehensive hands-on learning experience in integration of gender within HIS/DH. This internship program is designed to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical application in the public health sector. It offers a unique opportunity for a recent graduate to have practical skill in gender and monitoring, evaluation and learning while contributing to gender mainstreaming within DH/HIS. This initiative is part of JSI’s commitment to building local capacity and promoting gender integration within HIS/DH intervention in Ethiopia.

SERVICES/SCOPE OF WORK: The Intern shall use all reasonable efforts to perform the following services in accordance with the terms and conditions set forth in this agreement: 

Purpose and Objectives of the Internship:

The primary purpose of this internship is to provide a structured, hands-on learning experience for a recent graduate on DH and HIS, M&E, gender concepts, inclusion, consideration and integration, professionalism and networking. The intern will also contribute to Alliance for Gender Awareness and Resourcefulness (AGAR) program creating women data champions effort. By the end of the internship, the intern will:

  • Gain hands-on experience in gender integration within Health Information Systems (HIS) and Digital Health (DH).

  • A deeper understanding of gender-related challenges and initiatives in the health sector.

  • Enhance employability through practical exposure and professional networking.

  • Contribute to the AGAR Women Data Champions initiative and gender integration efforts at DUP and MOH.

  • Understand project MEL implementation 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborate with Project Staff and Youth Interns and provide support gender related activities 

  • Support the Women Data Champion Initiative of DUP in facilitating training, mentorships, and project assignments.

  • Prepare updates for the internal MERL bi-weekly meeting.

  • Track requests for proposals, partner projects, and external events focused on gender and development. 

  • Participate in events and presentations related to gender in HIS/DH and share insights with DUP staff.

  • Conduct different data analysis specific to sex disaggregation using routine data and provide insights.

  • Participate in report, presentation and other documents development 

  • Support any other responsibilities as assigned by the immediate supervisor

Working Relationship

  • The intern will work closely with the supervisor and project staff.

  • Regular check-ins and feedback sessions will be conducted to ensure alignment and progress.

  • The intern will be encouraged to participate actively in team meetings and discussions.

  • Number of Positions:  One (1)

  • Education: Fresh Bachelor degree graduate in Health System, Health Policy, Public Health or related disciplines.

  • GPA: A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 and passing the exit exam is required. 

  • Experience: Zero (0) years of professional experience required. This is an entry-level internship for new graduates.

  • Technical Skills: Proficient in using Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace.

  • Core Competencies:

    • Strong interest in gender issues, Health Information System (HIS).

    • Ability to work under pressure, long work hours, and high workload.

    • Self-motivated, honest, highly responsible, and punctual.

    • Proven organizational and interpersonal communication skills.

    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

    • Ability to manage a wide range of activities on a daily basis.

    • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with people representing a wide range of personal and organizational cultures.

  • Languages: Fluency in English and Amharic (both written and spoken) is required.
