JOB SUMMARY
The purpose of the Hygiene and Sanitation Officer position is responsible for supervising and implementing effective hygiene, sanitation, waste management, and housekeeping practices across all operational areas, including the solvent extraction plant (SEP), crude oil refinery, refill and packing facilities, warehouses, and entire company premises—from entrance to exit. This role ensures food safety and factory cleaning standards in compliance with national, international/IFC, and company-specific EHS policies and standards and also including ISO 22000 (FSM) and other ISO 45001, and ISO 14001 certifications requirements and document recording. The officer promotes a safe, hygienic and environmentally sustainable workplace, preventing contamination, managing waste and ensuring the safe handling and storage of chemicals—supporting the company's commitment to health, safety, food safety and environmental stewardship.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
- Ensure all hygiene, sanitation, waste management, housekeeping, and environmental activities across all company areas comply with local, national, and international standards, including ISO 22000 (FSM), EFDA, GMP and other relevant ISO requirements.
- Promote and enforce integrated EHS policies aligned with ISO standards related to hygiene, food safety, occupational health and safety, and environmental management.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness throughout the facility—including production zones, warehouses, administrative offices, entry/exit points, and operational areas—to prevent contamination and ensure product safety.
- Oversee waste management and disposal by accurately identifying all waste sources, properly categorizing, labeling, registering waste types and ensuring records are regularly updated.
- Monitor waste garbage tanks/bins & disposal points to ensure proper labeling maintenance.
- Supervise the collection, segregation, treatment, and disposal of waste in compliance with ISO 14001 standards, environmental regulations, and FDA requirements.
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness (housekeeping) in all areas to prevent contamination, pest infestations, and accidents, including the safe use, storage, and disposal of cleaning chemicals in adherence to safety protocols.
- Collaborate with MANEX, QC, and other departments to uphold GMP standards by ensuring cleanliness, hygiene, organized workspaces/5S-Kaizen implementation, and disciplined practices among staff to safeguard product integrity.
- Conduct risk assessment to identify hazards & risk factors related to sanitation, waste handling and housekeeping; implement control measures to protect people and food safety.
- Conduct routine inspections across all areas, maintain detailed records of sanitation, waste management, housekeeping, safety and promptly address any issues identified.
- Develop, deliver, and regularly review training programs on hygiene, waste management, GMP, chemical safety, and environmental practices for staff and contractors.
- Identify and ensure the proper distribution, use, and maintenance of PPE and safety equipment for sanitation personnel, food handlers, warehouse staff, and other involved workers.
- Facilitate regular medical checkups for food handlers and sanitation staff to ensure health standards are maintained and complied with EFDA requirements.
- Respond promptly to sanitation, waste, or housekeeping incidents by conducting investigations and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Regularly audit and review sanitation, waste management, housekeeping practices and GMP procedures, incorporating technological advancements, regulatory updates, and best practices for continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with production, Engineering/maintenance, QC, regulatory, and other relevant departments for integrated sanitation and environmental management, ensuring effective communication across the facility.
- Ensure all hygiene and sanitation activities follow written procedures and utilize relevant forms; oversee the procurement and availability of sanitation materials.
- Review and update sanitation and hygiene procedures/SOP, forms or systems to reflect current standards and best practices.
- Validate that sanitation activities effectively meet their intended purposes through monitoring and documentation of machinery, tanks, hoses, and production areas.
- Coordinate with pertinent departments to ensure effluent from cleaning activities complies with EPA and other regulatory standards.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the line manager.
Educational Qualification required
- University degree in Environmental Health, Water supply, Public Health, Health Education, or a related subject.
- Strong interpersonal skills, communication, presentation, and facilitation skills, and an ability to train and mentor staff.
- Desired spoken and written English.
- Good computer skills (particularly Excel, Word, and PPT)
Experience
- Solid experience in sanitation and hygiene (2+ years) within manufacturing responsibilities in the FMCG industry. Training in ISO 9001:2015 QMS and ISO 22000 FSMS is required.
- Minimum of 2 years in sanitation, waste management, housekeeping, or environmental safety within manufacturing, processing, or related industries, preferably with exposure to ISO standards implementation.
