JOB SUMMARY 

The Medical Officer (Blood Bank) oversees daily operations of the blood bank, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant collection, testing, storage, and distribution of blood and blood products in Setit Humera Hospital. This role involves supervising staff, maintaining regulatory standards, and coordinating physicians, nurses, and laboratory teams to meet patient transfusion needs. The role supports emergency and routine transfusion services, capacity building of staff, and compliance with national and international blood safety standards.]

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSABILITIES

  • Manage daily blood bank activities including collection, testing, labeling, storage, and distribution.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, national regulations, and accreditation standards
  • Support and manage blood bank operations, including donor recruitment, collection, testing, processing, storage, and issuance of blood products.
  • Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control (IPC) standards in all blood bank procedures.
  •  Monitor and maintain proper documentation, records, and reporting of blood bank activities.
  • Coordinate with clinical departments to ensure timely availability of blood for emergency and elective procedures.
  •  Implement quality assurance and safety measures to prevent transfusion-transmitted infections.
  •  Maintain inventory, ordering, and proper storage conditions for blood products and reagents.
  • Participate in audits, inspections, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support outbreak and emergency response activities requiring blood products.
  • Maintain accurate records of blood products, testing results, and transfusion histories.

  • Work closely with physicians, nurses, and laboratory staff to ensure timely and appropriate transfusions.

  • Minimum Public Health officer, or BSc Nurse degree and related fields
  • Two years of experience in blood bank service/management
  • Knowledge of blood transfusion protocols, safety standards, and emergency transfusion practices.
  • Experience in hospital blood bank settings or humanitarian context is preferred.
  •  Experience in humanitarian or low-resource settings is an added advantage.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Fluency in English (required); knowledge of local language(s) is an advantage.
  • Commitment to humanitarian principles and professional ethics.
  • Ability to work under pressure in fast-paced outbreak environments.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and multitasking skills.
  • Proactive, flexible, and capable of managing multiple responsibilities.
