JOB SUMMARY 

The role involves providing comprehensive, patient-centered medical care in line with up-to-date clinical knowledge and MOH and IMC protocols, including management of acute and life-threatening conditions, safe motherhood, and child health services while strictly adhering to infection prevention and control standards. It includes regular patient follow-up, clear communication with patients and families, and appropriate clinical decision-making on treatment, discharge, or referral. The position also ensures rational use and proper management of medicines and medical equipment, maintains patient confidentiality, and strengthens early referral systems and coordination between communities and Woreda health bureaus. In addition, it entails supervising and building the capacity of health extension workers, ensuring safe and timely referral of cases, and maintaining accurate daily documentation and reporting of all services provided.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSABILITIES

  • Provide medical consultations as needed, prescribing necessary treatment based on adapted and up-to-date medical knowledge, MOH and IMC protocols, values and universal hygiene standards to improve the patients’/beneficiaries’ health conditions.

  • Assess, diagnose, and manage acute medical cases, including severe infections, trauma, and complications.
  • Support emergency and life-saving procedures in collaboration with specialist staff.
  • Carry out acute and life-threatening illnesses treatment at the primary healthcare level including safe motherhood and child health consultation based on infection prevention and control guidelines

  • Keep the patient and/or his/her family informed about the illness and provide appropriate explanations about the treatment to follow, checking they have understood.

  • Follow up the evolution of the patients through daily consultations and examinations, prescribing the necessary treatment according to MOH protocols, adapting treatment when necessary, deciding whether patient is ready for discharge or requires transfer to another department or facility.

  • Monitor and control the rational distribution of medicines and equipment under his/her responsibility and ensure the quality, disinfection and sterilization of the medical material.

  • Ensure patient confidentiality is always respected.

  • Strengthening linkages and coordination mechanisms between community and the Woreda health bureaus 
  • Strengthening of early referrals mechanism.
  • Ensure all referral cases are properly transported to the nearest or woreda capital hospital based on the availability of ambulance and seriousness of the illness.
  • Assure general compliance with standard infection prevention and control standards.

  • Provide supervision, technical assistance, and capacity building to health extension workers.

  • Responsible for day-to-day documentation and report of service provided.

  • Provide comprehensive clinical care in emergency, outpatient, and inpatient settings.
  • Mentor and supervise nurses, medical officers, and junior staff in clinical management.
  • Ensure accurate documentation, reporting, and medical record-keeping.
  • Implement infection prevention and control (IPC) practices according to hospital and IMC standards.
  • Participate in hospital emergency preparedness and response activities.
  • Coordinate patient referrals with higher-level facilities as needed.
  • Contribute to quality improvement and clinical audits.

  • Preferably Doctor of Medicine (Medical Doctor) with relevant clinical experience. Alternatively, BSc in public health (Health officer), with proven clinical experience. Candidate should have a valid registration and practicing license.
  • Two years’ experience as a medical doctor. Priority will be given to applicants with previous clinical experience in health facility or NGO level.
  • Good written and spoken ability of the local language (fluent in Somali Language) is Mandatory
  • Extremely flexible, able to work independently, and can cope with stressful situations and frustrations.
  • Interest in and ability to work in team.
  • Good organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work in remote and potentially insecure environments
