  1. Background

alignAfrica is implementing the YAG PLUS Project, a two-year initiative designed to strengthen Youth Advisory Groups (YAGs) and support young people to transition from meaningful civic participation into education, work-based learning, employment, entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihood opportunities.

The project will provide YAG members with structured learning, career guidance, employability and entrepreneurship skills, supervised work-based learning, mentorship, coaching and linkages to employment and financial opportunities.

To support effective implementation, alignAfrica is seeking qualified Training and Mentoring Consultant who will work directly with YAG members to facilitate learning, provide individualized guidance, strengthen practical skills and support young people throughout their selected pathways.

  1. Purpose of the Position

The Training and Mentoring Consultant will be responsible for Providing training, coaching participants and providing structured mentorship to YAG members throughout the YAG PLUS project period.

The position combines three complementary functions:

  • Trainer: Deliver high-quality, participatory and inclusive learning sessions.

  • Coach: Provide practical, individualized support to help youth apply skills, overcome barriers and progress toward their goals.

  • Mentor: Provide ongoing guidance, encouragement, role modelling and career/business support.

  1. Key Responsibilities

A. Training and Facilitation

  1. Module Delivery: Deliver YAG PLUS training using approved curricula, guides, and participatory, youth-friendly methods.

  2. Inclusive Facilitation: Adapt materials to diverse learning needs and ensure accessible, safe environments for all participants, including youth with disabilities.

  3. Assessment & Support: Conduct pre- and post-training assessments, track individual needs, and refer participants requiring extra support to project staff.

B. Coaching

  1. Targeted Coaching: Provide individual and small-group coaching tailored to participants' chosen pathways.

  2. Action Planning: Guide youth to assess strengths, gaps, and barriers to build realistic career or business action plans.

  3. Progress Tracking: Monitor goal progress, offer constructive feedback, and coach participants to solve challenges and make independent decisions.

C. Mentorship

  1. Structured Relationship: Establish regular mentoring relationships, offering guidance, encouragement, and positive role modeling.

  2. Skill & Leadership Building: Help youth build confidence, leadership, communication, and workplace skills by sharing professional experience and practical lessons.

  3. Problem-Solving Support: Encourage persistence and guide interns and young entrepreneurs through workplace or business challenges.

  4. Safeguarding & Ethics: Maintain professional boundaries and strict confidentiality, ensuring full compliance with alignAfrica safeguarding standards and reporting concerns promptly.

Note: Selected Training and mentoring Consultant will be provided with Training of Trainers (TOT) to be provided by alignAfrica within YAG PLUS Project.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Education: BA/BSc in Business Administration, Economics, Development Studies, Social Work, Education, or related fields. A Master’s degree is an advantage.

  • Experience:

  • Minimum 3+ years of relevant professional experience in training, coaching, mentoring, youth development, employability, entrepreneurship, career development or related areas.

  • Demonstrated experience facilitating training for youth or young adults.

  • Experience supporting employment, entrepreneurship, vocational skills or work-readiness programs is highly desirable.

  • Experience working with vulnerable, disadvantaged or diverse youth is an advantage.

  • Experience working with development organizations, NGOs, private-sector employers or youth-focused programs is an advantage.

  • Pedagogy: Proven expertise in Adult Learning (Andragogy) and Experiential Learning methodologies.

  • Local Residency & Knowledge: Must live in the target city/region and possess deep knowledge of the local socio-economic and business landscape.

  • Languages: Fluency in Amharic and English. Command of the local regional languages of your duty station is Mandatory.

  • Core Competencies: Strong leadership, active coaching, partnership building, and cross-cultural communication skills

  • TOT Certification: Training and mentoring consultant must have received TOT related to soft skill, employability and Entrepreneurship, career development or related areas.
