Job Description

KEFI Minerals is preparing to build the Tulu Kapi project in Western Ethiopia. The project includes an open pit mine that will produce 2.0 Mtpa for approximately 8 years.

Construction is set to start in 2026.

The Environmental Department is essential in managing the project’s impact on nature and the local area and key to keeping the Legal License to Operate through government permits and the Social License to Operate by meeting the expectations of the local community with regard to access to natural resources and the quality of these resources.

The Environmental Superintendent will implement an Environmental Management System and help the company meet the requirements of the Environmental Management Plan. This plan focuses on legislation and alignment with international best practices like the IFC Performance Standards. The role ensures the mine helps meet UN Sustainable Development Goals and follows Voluntary Codes and Practices for environmental care.

The role carries full accountability for on‑site environmental performance, ensuring compliance with Ethiopian regulatory requirements, The position provides strategic oversight, technical guidance, and operational support to site teams to ensure responsible, compliant, and sustainable mining operations.

Job Requirements

Requirements for the Role

  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Biology, or a related technical field.

  • At least 5 years’ work experience in managing environmental impacts and following international standards.

  • Experience managing ESIA implementation and environmental monitoring programs

  • Experience working in rural areas and experience in West Wollega or Oromia is a distinct advantage

  • Detailed knowledge of Ethiopian environmental laws and regional land regulations and permitting processes.

  • Strong understanding of technical issues like water treatment, waste management, and site rehabilitation.

  • High-level skills with Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel) and environmental data software.

Technical Skills

  • Intellectual Capacity: Must have the intellectual capability to deal with ambiguity and be able to evaluate alternative solutions in a coherent manner.

  • Exceptional Organisational Skills: Ability to manage large amounts of technical data and monitoring records.

  • Strong Attention to Detail: High accuracy in taking samples and checking quality.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication with language proficiency in English, Afaan Oromo and Amharic at the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) category C2 Mastery standard and the ability to present technical information clearly and concisely to diverse audiences

  • Risk Management: Proactive approach to identifying and mitigating people risks

  • Problem-Solving: Ability to find and fix technical environmental issues or system errors quickly.

  • Integrity and Confidentiality: Ability to handle sensitive data safely and honestly.

  • .Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks and meet strict government reporting deadlines

  • Adaptability: Willingness to learn new systems and adapt to evolving management practices.

  • Team Orientation: Ability to work effectively as part of a team and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
