Roster: Fly-In/Fly-Out (6 Weeks On / 2 Weeks Off)

About The Role

The Instrumentation Technician is responsible for the installation, calibration, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and commissioning of instrumentation and process control systems across the mining and processing operation. The role ensures that field instrumentation, control valves, PLC/DCS/SCADA systems, safety instrumented systems, analysers, communication systems, and associated control equipment operate safely, accurately, reliably, and in accordance with operational and maintenance standards. The position will work closely with Process Plant, Electrical, Mechanical, Operations, Maintenance, Metallurgy, Engineering, and other relevant teams to maintain process control reliability and support safe and efficient production.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Installation and Maintenance

• Install, maintain, and repair instrumentation and control systems, including pneumatic, electronic, and computer-based devices.

• Maintain control valves, positioners, and actuators.

• Read and interpret P&IDs and loop diagrams.

• Maintain density gauges and comply with radiation safety requirements.

Calibration and Testing

• Calibrate and test instruments and control systems to ensure accurate readings and proper functioning.

• Calibrate pressure, temperature, and level transmitters.

• Conduct loop checking and instrument commissioning.

• Calibrate and maintain pH/ORP probes in leach and CIL circuits.

• Calibrate weight meters and belt scales.

Troubleshooting and Repair

• Diagnose and troubleshoot instrument and control system failures and perform necessary repairs or replacements.

• Conduct SCADA/HMI fault-finding, tag configuration, and alarm management.

• Conduct PLC fault-finding on Allen-Bradley, Siemens, ABB, and Schneider systems.

• Troubleshoot valve positioning problems.

• Diagnose field-to-control-room signal problems.

• Conduct DCS configuration and fault-finding.

Preventative Maintenance

• Implement and maintain preventative maintenance programs to ensure equipment reliability and longevity.

• Conduct protection systems inspections.

• Monitor instrument health.

• Provide support for online stream/assay analyzers.

Data Logging and Reporting

• Collect, record, and analyse data from instruments and control systems and prepare reports as required.

Safety Compliance

• Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures related to instrumentation and control systems.

• Maintain cyanide safety instrumented systems and critical interlocks.

• Conduct safety instrumented systems (SIS) and interlock testing.

Documentation

• Maintain accurate records of all work performed, including calibrations, repairs, and maintenance activities.

Coordination

• Collaborate with other departments and personnel to ensure efficient and effective operation of mining processes.

Process Improvement

• Identify and implement improvements to instrumentation and control systems to enhance efficiency and safety.

Process Control Systems (DCS)

• Work with distributed control systems to monitor and control various mining processes.

Field Instrumentation

• Install, calibrate, and maintain a variety of field instruments, such as sensors, transmitters, and controllers.

Communication Networks

• Maintain and troubleshoot communication networks used to transmit data from instruments and control systems.

Environmental Monitoring Systems

• Inspect and maintain environmental monitoring systems, such as those used to monitor dust, gas, and noise levels.

Geotechnical Instruments

• Work with geotechnical instruments used to monitor slope stability and other geotechnical parameters.

Dewatering Systems

• Maintain and troubleshoot dewatering systems used to remove water from mine workings.

Pumps and Storage Systems

• Work with pumping and storage systems used to transport and store materials and fluids.

Finance & Commercial

• Maintain and/or minimise expenditure.

• Prevent and/or reduce wastage.

• Control equipment in hand.

Leadership / Management

• Manage self.

• Apply processes and procedures to standard.

• Plan weekly and daily tasks.

• Ensure equipment/tools are available.

• Provide technical specialist input.

• Collaborate with teams and encourage individual contribution.

• Investigate and resolve problems by finding solutions.

• Work constructively with all teams.

• Encourage input from team members.

• Develop trainee and/or backup support within the team for roster breaks.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Qualifications

• BSC Degree in Instrumentation, Industrial Automation, Electrical/Electronic engineering, Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related Field of Study from recognized institution

• An instrumentation certificate or recognized industrial instrumentation qualification will be advantageous.

• Additional training or certification in PLC, DCS, SCADA, process control, calibration, or industrial automation will be an advantage.

Experience

• 3–5 years of relevant experience in instrumentation, process control, mining, mineral processing, heavy industry, manufacturing, or a similar technical environment.

• Experience in a mining or mineral-processing operation will be highly advantageous.

• Demonstrated experience with field instrumentation, calibration, troubleshooting, and maintenance.

• Experience with PLC, DCS, SCADA/HMI, control valves, process analysers, and industrial communication systems is desirable.

• Equivalent combinations of education, technical training, and relevant work experience may be considered.

• Industrial instrumentation and process-control principles.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

Instrumentation & Calibration

• Install, calibrate, test, and maintain industrial instrumentation.

• Use calibration equipment and test instruments safely and accurately.

• Diagnose instrument performance and measurement errors.

Troubleshooting

• Diagnose electrical, electronic, pneumatic, instrumentation, and control-system faults.

• Troubleshoot field devices, control loops, communication signals, and control valves.

• Identify root causes of recurring instrumentation failures.

PLC/DCS/SCADA

• Perform basic to advanced fault finding, depending on competency and authorization, on PLC, DCS, SCADA, and HMI systems.

• Work with systems such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, ABB, and Schneider.

• Understand control-system alarms, tags, trends, interlocks, and process signals.

Technical Documentation

• Read and interpret P&IDs, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, schematics, instrument datasheets, and technical drawings.

• Maintain accurate maintenance and calibration documentation.

Process Instrumentation

• Understand instrumentation used in mineral-processing environments.

• Work effectively with process measurement and control equipment used in crushing, milling, leaching, CIL, tailings, water, pumping, and related process areas.

Safety

• Apply safe work practices when working with electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, process, chemical, and radiation-related equipment.

• Apply LOTO, permit-to-work, isolation, testing, and verification procedures.
