About the Program
The Global Communities Food for Progress (FFPr) 2025, Partnership for Productivity (P4P) Project in Ethiopia, is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). This five-year initiative is focusing on enhancing and strengthening of the livestock market systems in Ethiopia. The project aims to make the livestock sectors more productive, resilient, and profitable, thereby driving economic growth in the country.
P4P utilizes five integrated interventions that will be implemented in collaboration with both
US and Ethiopian private sector stakeholders. The interventions include:
Increase Use of Improved Agricultural Techniques and Technologies: Promote the adoption of advanced techniques and technologies to enhance agriculture and livestock productivity.
Increase Availability of Quality Inputs: Ensure Ethiopian farmers have access to high-quality agricultural/livestock inputs.
Trade Capacity Development: Support efforts to improve trade opportunities within the livestock market systems and value chains.
Increase Access to Finance and Risk Management: Expand availability to financial and risk management services to livestock producers.
Policy and Advocacy: Support policy and institutional reforms to create and expand market access for quality livestock production inputs and technologies needed by Ethiopian farmers.
The Opportunity
Are you passionate about improving livestock productivity and strengthening market systems to deliver sustainable development outcomes in Ethiopia? We are seeking a Livestock Productivity Specialist for the Oromia Region to lead the implementation of interventions that enhance livestock productivity and support inclusive market growth. Reporting to the Livestock Productivity Lead, you will work closely with public and private sector partners, market actors, and other stakeholders to identify opportunities, address systemic constraints, and promote sustainable access to productivity-enhancing inputs, technologies, and services.
Key Responsibilities
The Regional Livestock Productivity Specialists will spearhead the implementation of interventions that promote demand creation and utilization of livestock productivity enhancement inputs, technologies, and practices within their respective regions. The specialists will collaborate closely with livestock producers and enterprises, including poultry farms, dairy operations, feedlots, milk collection and marketing cooperatives, producer groups, livestock traders, and unions, to advance the adoption of animal health services, quality feed and fodder, and livestock genetic improvement technologies, thereby strengthening the productivity and competitiveness of Ethiopian livestock producers.
Primary Responsibilities
Lead the regional level capacity-building initiatives, including training programs for livestock producers to enhance effective utilization of animal health services, feed and fodder innovations, and genetic improvement technologies across dairy, poultry, beef, and sheep and goat value chains.
Design and deliver training and refresher programs for community-level service providers- including animal health workers, private veterinary pharmacies, artificial inseminators, feed mixers, and other livestock service providers, to strengthen the delivery and uptake of quality veterinary, genetic improvement, and feed/fodder inputs and services.
Organize and facilitate regional-level field demonstration days, learning events, and stakeholder engagement platforms to promote knowledge exchange and best practice dissemination.
Support the design and implementation of targeted Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaigns, including trade fairs and promotional events, to accelerate the adoption of improved livestock production technologies and management practices, with emphasis on climate-smart solutions.
Collaborate closely with regional market analysis and financial access specialists to facilitate market linkages among producers, input suppliers, aggregators, traders, processors, and both domestic and export buyers.
Contribute to policy dialogue, learning events, and analytical efforts aimed at improving the enabling environment for access to and adoption of veterinary, feed, and genetic improvement inputs and technologies.
Ensure all interventions adhere to facilitative market system development (MSD) principles, with strong emphasis on sustainability, scalability, inclusion, and reduced reliance on project support.
Monitor, document, and report progress on the utilization of veterinary inputs, feed and fodder, and genetic improvement technologies in alignment with USDA P4P performance indicators for quarterly, biannual, and annual reports and work planning processes.
Collaborate with strategic partners such as AfriScout and Heifer International at the regional level to integrate livestock input supply and utilization data with complementary digital solutions.
Serve as a regional focal point for communications, coordination, and partnerships with regional government authorities and other stakeholders, representing the P4P project to maximize uptake of livestock productivity-enhancing solutions.

Job Requirements
Qualifications
Education & Experience
BSc degree in Animal Science, Agribusiness, Agricultural Extension, or Veterinary Science (DVM), or a related field, with a minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience; OR
MSc degree in a related field with at least 5 years of relevant experience in livestock development, agribusiness, or agricultural extension programs.
Professional Experience
Proven track record working with producer groups, private livestock enterprises, dairy and livestock marketing cooperatives, agricultural aggregators, feed mills, agro dealers, veterinary service providers, and public-private extension systems.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities efficiently, both independently and collaboratively, under tight deadlines.
Core Competencies
Donor-Funded Project Experience: Prior involvement in donor-funded livestock development and marketing projects, preferably in the target regions. Experience with USAID and/or USDA-funded projects is a significant advantage.
Technical Expertise: Demonstrated proficiency in Market Systems Development (MSD), private sector engagement strategies, and cooperative development and management.
Relationship Management: Proven ability to build strong, trust-based relationships with private sector actors, livestock producer groups, cooperatives, and public institutions.
Language Proficiency: This position is open exclusively to Ethiopian nationals. Fluency in English is required; proficiency in Amharic and Afan Oromo is an added advantage.
Sector Knowledge: Strong understanding of the challenges and opportunities within poultry, dairy, beef, and sheep and goat value chains in Ethiopia, particularly in the target regions.
