MSD is an indigenous, non-profit civil society organization established in 1999 with a mission to improve the health, well-being, and socio-economic conditions of communities across Ethiopia. Over the past decades, MSD has evolved into a well-established development and humanitarian organization, delivering evidence-based, community-centered programs that respond to the evolving needs of vulnerable and underserved populations.

MSD implements integrated programs across a broad range of thematic areas, including: Health and Nutrition: TB, HIV/AIDS, sexual and reproductive health (SRH), maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH), and nutrition. Education and Skills Development: Access to quality education, technical and vocational education and training (TVET), and skills development.  Social Mobilization and Livelihoods: Economic strengthening, community mobilization, and prevention of harmful traditional practices (HTPs), gender-based violence (GBV), and female genital mutilation (FGM), Migration and Trafficking: Safe migration, protection, rehabilitation, and reintegration support for migrants, returnees, and victims of trafficking; Child Care and Development: Child protection, early childhood care and development, and infant and young child feeding. , Human Rights and Good Governance: Democratization, peace building, social accountability, civic engagement, and dialogue; Humanitarian and Emergency Response: Integrated assistance and protection services for communities affected by conflict, displacement, disasters, and other emergencies; and Environment and Climate Change: Environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and biodiversity conservation.

Through these integrated programs, MSD works in close collaboration with federal and regional government institutions, communities, civil society organizations, development and humanitarian partners, and other stakeholders to strengthen local systems, expand access to essential services, promote inclusion and equity, and build resilient communities across Ethiopia.

Project overview

MSD implementing a comprehensive HIV prevention in 6 non-ART DICS of high-incidence priority woredas 23 key populations friendly clinics, 5 higher learning institutions (Universities) and 3 industrial development parks of hotspot areas with larger number of workers in Amhara Region funded by global fund GC7 and align with the NSP (2023-2027) and the objectives of the new Global Fund GC7 grant.

Job Summary

The AGYW Mentor will provide mentorship, guidance, and education to adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in higher learning institutions to promote HIV prevention, sexual and reproductive health, and overall well-being. The mentor will serve as a trusted resource, fostering a safe and supportive environment for AGYW while linking them to essential services.

Key Responsibilities

Outreach and Mentorship

Conduct regular outreach to engage high-risk AGYW in higher learning institutions.

Build trusting relationships with AGYW to provide mentorship and support tailored to their needs.

Identify and support high-risk AGYW to access HIV prevention, counseling, and other health services.

Education and Awareness

Provide health education on topics such as HIV prevention, sexual and reproductive health, and gender-based violence (GBV).

Facilitate small group discussions, workshops, and one-on-one mentoring sessions on risk reduction strategies.

Distribute educational materials, condoms, and other prevention tools during outreach and mentoring sessions.

Service Linkage and Referral

Support AGYW in accessing services at health facilities, or other relevant institutions.

Facilitate referrals for HIV testing, treatment, counseling, and other medical or social support services.

Collaborate with service providers and higher learning institution authorities to address barriers to service access.

Promotion of Digital Tools

Promote the use of an Android-based HIV risk screening app among AGYW in higher learning institutions.

Guide AGYW on how to use the app to assess and understand their HIV risk and access appropriate services.

Collaborate with project staff to monitor app adoption and provide feedback for improvements.

Monitoring and Reporting

Maintain accurate records of outreach activities, mentoring sessions, and referrals made.

Collect feedback from AGYW to assess the impact of mentoring and improve services.

Prepare and submit regular reports to the Project Coordinator

Job Requirements

  1. Qualifications

  2. Education

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or Health Officer from a recognized institution.

  • Must be a licensed/registered nurse with a valid practicing certificate.

  1. Experience

  • Lived experience or familiarity with challenges faced by AGYW in higher learning institutions is essential.

  • Experience in mentorship, peer education, or outreach is an advantage.

  1. Working Conditions

  • Based at the universities or higher learning institution, with frequent outreach to AGYW.

  • May involve work during evenings, weekends, or holidays to meet AGYW needs.
