Key Responsibilities
- Teach trainees the science of coffee cupping, including:
- Ethiopian coffee varieties (e.g., Yirgacheffe, Sidamo, Harrar) and their unique flavor profiles.
- International and Ethiopian grading systems (e.g., Ethiopian Commodity Exchange/ECX standards).
- Coffee defects, quality parameters, and Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) protocols.
- Documentation practices for traceability, certifications (e.g., organic, Fair Trade), and export requirements.
- Conduct classes on sensory analysis, covering aroma, acidity, body, and aftertaste.
- Explain Ethiopia’s coffee cultural heritage and its significance in global markets.
- Lead hands-on cupping sessions using Ethiopian coffee samples and tools (e.g., spoons, grinders, cupping bowls).
Demonstrate:
- Aroma evaluation, slurping techniques, and scoring using SCA or ECX scorecards.
- Identification of defects (e.g., sourness, ferment) and their impact on grading.
- Supervise trainees in calibration exercises to ensure consistency in scoring.
- Design and administer written exams on theoretical concepts (e.g., ECX grading criteria).
- Evaluate trainees’ practical skills through blind cupping tests and real-world scenarios.
- Provide individualized feedback to improve trainees’ cupping accuracy and documentation.
- Maintain training records in compliance with Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA) regulations.
- Prepare reports on trainee progress for company and regulatory purposes.
- Ensure training materials align with Ethiopia’s coffee export laws and global standards (e.g., SCA, CQI).
- Conduct training sessions on coffee cupping, grading, sensory evaluation, and related subjects.
- Deliver both theoretical and practical lessons using approved curriculum and training materials.
- Demonstrate proper cupping protocols and ensure trainees follow correct procedures.
- Assist in developing and updating training modules, lesson plans, and practical exercises.
- Ensure all training content aligns with industry standards and organizational quality requirements.
- Evaluate trainee performance through practical tests, cupping exams, and written assessments.
- Provide feedback, guidance, and support to trainees throughout the training program.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, performance, and completion.
- Ensure training sessions adhere to safety, hygiene, and professional cupping protocols.
- Assist in quality control tasks when required (sample cupping, calibration, grading).
- Prepare training spaces, equipment, cupping supplies, and materials before each session.
- Ensure all training tools are cleaned, maintained, and organized after lessons.
- Submit training reports, trainee results, and required documents on time.
- Stay updated on industry trends, cupping innovations, and global coffee standards.
- Participate in workshops, calibration sessions, and professional development activities.
- Uphold consistent cupping procedures, quality standards, and calibration practices.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conducting both theory sessions and live cupping demonstrations.
- Explaining international coffee grading, tasting notes, and cupping protocols.
- Supervising trainees during practical cupping, ensuring accurate techniques and documentation.
- Developing training schedules and materials for both classroom and practical work.
- Evaluating trainee performance through tests, practical assessments, and feedback.
- Creating professional course outlines and ensuring they are relevant and current.
- Adjusting instruction style based on feedback and effectiveness.
- Providing a respectful, hands-on learning environment.
- Conduct professional coffee cupping sessions and training
- Teach the principles of sensory analysis, flavor profiling, and defect identification
- Develop cupping protocols and curriculum based on industry standards
- Evaluate and certify trainees' cupping skills
- Maintain high standards of hygiene and professionalism in the lab
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Coffee Technology, Food Science, Agriculture, or a related field (preferred).
- Certificate of Competency (COC) Level 4 in Coffee or equivalent recognized certification.
- Has experience in coffee cupping, grading, sensory evaluation, or quality assessment.
- Has prior experience in teaching or training, preferably in coffee-related courses.
- Strong understanding of coffee quality control procedures and industry standards.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and instructional skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to delivering high-quality education and consistent training results.
- Ability to evaluate trainee performance and maintain accurate training records.
