The Economic Transformation Cluster (ETC) is a portfolio of projects under Germany’s development cooperation with Ethiopia, implemented by GIZ. These projects strengthen the country’s private sector so that MSMEs, start-ups, and growth-oriented firms can create jobs, raise incomes, and contribute to Ethiopia’s economic transformation. Implemented on behalf of BMZ and partners such as the EU, FCDO, and the Gates Foundation, ETC covers themes like enterprise development, finance, digitalization, skills, and sustainable production.

Projects within the Cluster are supported by two cross-cutting structures: Practices, which provide thematic expertise, and Support Units, which deliver shared services such as communication, monitoring, and knowledge management. The Communications Team is organised as a Support Unit with the aim of ensuring consistent, high-quality communication across the Cluster, providing writing, design, multimedia, and digital services. It strengthens ETC’s visibility with donors and partners and helps projects and Practices position themselves as thought leaders through products such as policy briefs, social media campaigns, and explainer videos. The Cluster is therefore looking to hire a contents specialist to strengthen the Communications Service Unit (Coms Unit) who shall craft clear, compelling narratives and adapt technical content for diverse audiences. More specifically, the Contents Specialist shall

• Source, develop, and adapt compelling content from projects and Practices, translating technical evidence into clear, engaging narratives, stories, and messages for diverse audiences, including donors and stakeholders.

• Edit, proofread, and format communication and knowledge products in line with GIZ, partner, and donor brand standards, ensuring accuracy, quality, and professional presentation.

• Plan and manage multi-channel content delivery, including reports, briefs, speeches, blogs, social media, and web copy, maintaining an editorial calendar and monitoring performance for continuous improvement.

• Ensure coherence and compliance by aligning outputs with communication standards, contributing to knowledge management, and collaborating closely with the Multimedia Producer, Graphic Designer, Donor Liaison, and external consultants

Qualifications

• Postgraduate degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
• Exceptional, proven experience in the development sector may be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.

Professional experience

• Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in communications, content development, or editorial work.
• Experience with newspapers, magazines, or digital platforms is an advantage.
• Familiarity with Ethiopia’s political and socio-economic context, particularly in areas of economic transformation, is an asset.
• Experience working with donor co-funded project, especially EU-funded projects (is strongly desired). 

Other knowledge, additional competencies

• Strong communication, research, editing, and writing skills (samples of original work to be submitted).
• Ability to translate technical information into clear, accessible, and engaging content for diverse audiences.
• Knowledge of interactive and visual storytelling methods; experience with digital content production is an advantage.

Languages

• English (required - full professional proficiency). 
• German (preferred) 
• Local languages (e.g. Amharic; Oromifia; Tigrigna - considered as an asset).
