Project Background
To explore the implementation fidelity and enablers, health system bottlenecks, inter-cadre collaboration dynamics, and the acceptability of primary healthcare innovations, qualitative evaluation studies are being conducted across national, subnational, woreda, and community levels. Qualitative data collectors facilitate in-depth exploration of health system context.
Core Responsibilities
Orientation & Calibration: Participate in pre-field qualitative orientation, tool calibration, and probing exercises
In-Depth & Key Informant Interviews: Conduct In-Depth Interviews (IDIs) and Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) with regional/woreda health managers, PHCU directors, healthcare providers and clients.
Focus Group Discussions: Facilitate Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with Health Extension Workers (HEWs), Village Health Leaders (VHLs), and community members.
Recording & Note-Taking: Audio-record all interviews and discussions, take detailed context-rich field notes, and complete daily debriefing logs.
Verbatim Transcription: Translate and transcribe qualitative audio recordings verbatim from local languages into high-quality, typed English transcripts.
Daily Debriefing: Submit detailed daily field summaries outlining key qualitative themes, non-verbal observations, and emergent bottlenecks.
Job Requirements
Educational Background: Master's Degree (MPH, MSc, or PhD) preferred in Public Health, Health Education/Behavioral Science, or related health science fields.
Qualitative Research Experience: Minimum 3–5 years of hands-on experience facilitating qualitative research (KIIs, FGDs, observations) in public health and health system evaluations.
Technical Competencies: Demonstrated expertise in qualitative interviewing techniques, active probing, audio recording management, and verbatim transcription/translation.
Language Skills: Excellent written and spoken English (for transcript submission) and native/fluent command of the local language spoken in study woredas (Amharic, Afan Oromo, Somali, or Afar).
System Knowledge: Deep familiarity with the Ethiopian health system and qualitative data quality assurance standards.
