Senior Cost Accountant

Reporting Line: Financial Controller

Job Purpose

The Senior Cost Accountant is responsible for planning, analyzing, and controlling product and operational costs to support profitability, pricing decisions, and efficient resource utilization. The role ensures accurate cost allocation, variance analysis, and timely reporting, while working closely with operations, procurement, and finance teams to drive cost optimization and continuous performance improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Costing & Inventory Control

  • Develop, maintain, and review standard costing systems for products and services.

  • Ensure accuracy of bills of materials (BOMs), routings, and cost structures within ERP systems.

  • Monitor inventory valuation, work-in-progress (WIP), and finished goods costing.

  • Support physical stock counts and investigate inventory variances.

  • Perform month-end balance sheet account reconciliations related to inventory and cost accounts.

Cost Analysis & Reporting

  • Prepare detailed cost analysis reports covering materials, labor, overheads, and conversion costs.

  • Analyze actual costs against standards and explain variances with clear, actionable insights.

  • Provide cost breakdowns to support pricing decisions, tenders, and margin analysis.

  • Track key cost drivers and identify opportunities for cost reduction and efficiency improvements.

Operational & Commercial Support

  • Partner with operations and procurement teams to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and control costs.

  • Support make-or-buy decisions, process improvement initiatives, and capital expenditure analysis.

  • Provide financial input for new product development and operational change initiatives.

Controls & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, internal policies, and audit requirements.

  • Maintain strong internal controls over costing, inventory, and production reporting.

  • Support internal and external audits by providing accurate and timely cost documentation.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Lead continuous improvements in costing processes, ERP utilization, and reporting automation.

  • Support ERP system implementations or enhancements related to costing and inventory modules.

  • Coach, train, and mentor junior cost accounting staff.

Job Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in cost accounting, preferably within a manufacturing or production environment.

  • Strong knowledge of standard costing, variance analysis, inventory management, and production accounting.

  • Hands-on experience with ERP systems such Microsoft Dynamics Business Central.

  • Advanced Excel and financial analysis skills.
